An amazing sequel and the perfect homage to both Stephen King and Stanley Kubrick. Almost everything feels right in this film. From the brilliant actors to the unsettling score, everything falls into place. I have often times had trouble with sequels being made almost forty years after their originals (i.e. Star Wars, Blade Runner) but this felt like a sequel. It felt like it was placed in the same universe as The Shining. Mike Flanagan was the perfect choice for writing and directing this film, and in my opinion the only choice. Mike is quite good at making this kind of horror (If you have watched The Haunting of Hill House, you will get what I mean. He understands it. He has made a film that caters to both King's and Kubrick's vision while adding the mike flanagan style to it with his distinct shots and color correcting. The part that really blew me away was the return to the Overlook Hotel. The recreation of the iconic shots of The Shining just. blew me away. I don't know how else to describe it, but here comes my one critique of the film. I wish there was more time spent at the Overlook because it is the staple of both films. It is what makes The Shining The Shining. It would have been nice to see Danny confronting his demons more because to me, that is the more riveting part of the story. The scene where Danny talks to Jack as the bartender (this scene surprised me in the best way) was moving and kept me on the edge of my seat. This film is about Danny confronting the things he has repressed and pushed away for years and years, so that should be the focus. I wanted more of those scenes, confronting the spirits from The Shining. Otherwise, I couldn't have asked for anything more. Everything that I didn't mention in this review was phenomenal and I feel bad for not mentioning them. Therefore, I'm concluding this review by saying go watch this movie for yourself, if you liked The Shining and are skeptical to see if this sequel will live up to it. Mike Flanagan has created a work of art and deserves more than 7.7. So please, go see this film and give it the attention it deserves.

Waited 39yrs to make a continuation of 1980s the shining. Maybe it will be less for a continuation of the movie Constantine. We need more artistically made films like this. Did you know that the twins couldnt get in to ANY drama school after staring in this film as NONE of them would take them. One is a professor now and another one is a lawyer. When you learn about Kings past, particularly battles with addiction, its not hard to see why me made jack sympathetic and particularly didnt like how Kubrick made him more evil. A part of king wants to remove the agency of his past and the harm he likely inflicted on his own son because for him it felt like possession, but Kubrick presents this as an outsider seeing a man harm his family and thats why King sees it as “cold”. The same thing can be said about “IT” in the way that you could make that whole movie about bad childhoods and sexual abuse of you reveal at the end that there was no supernatural force and the children imagined it as such because you cant battle a society that looks the other way when a bully is beating the shit out of you, but blame it all on a monster and maybe you can kill the monster.

I didn't understand what was the use of the witch's followers? They had no powers except for that one pusher, and they died so stupidly. Matter of fact, they all died stupidly without much thought. And it was way too long and boring.

It was a great premise. However, I felt like it could go a bit deeper. It seemed like the story was wading in shallow waters of a kiddy pool but the story was so good so I kept expecting a slip into the deep end that didn't come. This could possibly be written into a great tv series because there is much more that the writers can do with it. I'll take a sequel over a remake any day. Darwin twins: come play with us Danny. For me the highlight is the actual/model hedge maze scene with the Bartok music. Not viscerally horrific, like many of the choices here, but perfectly spinetingling and compelling. The driving scene too, with the chilling female vocals evokes awe/foreboding, and that scene with Jack seated with Danny in the bedroom, reassuring his son always gives me such a feeling of dread.

I always took it as Jack is actually a ghost from 1921. and his wife and kid can see him with the shining. Either way it really doesn't really make any sense with the photo at the end. I guess were doomed to just keep dragging perfect movies thru the cash grab grinder until the entire cannon of cinema is destroyed.
